How to Take the Perfect Ring Selfie

How to Take the Perfect Ring Selfie

It’s happened - you are officially engaged! Of course, you want to share the exciting news with your friends and family, but you may not have the time to call each and every special person in your life. Once you’ve broken the news, people are going to be itching to see that ring - and you're itching to show it off! But how do you get the perfect shot of your new lifelong accessory? Read our tips below on how to capture the best photo of your ring.

Lights, camera, action!

Lighting is key to capturing the highest quality image of your ring. Natural light is ideal, as it will showcase your ring without any flashback or glare. You’ll want to ensure there are no color flares or other aberrations that can disrupt the image. We also recommend using an editing app to sharpen and enhance your photo, as phone cameras often fail to capture the brilliance and complexity of small objects like diamonds. Our favorite go-to editing apps are VSCO, Snapseed, or Adobe Lightroom CC. Lastly, you’ll want to find a fun but more minimal background so it doesn’t distract from your ring. If you do have a busier background, consider cropping the image or blurring the background so the focus is on your hand.

Putting your best hand forward

You want to showcase your beautiful ring, not your hand and any dry skin it might be holding on to! Have your hand looking its best by applying a lightweight lotion before taking the image. If you want to go the extra mile, apply some cuticle oil to your nails as well. Our secret weapon is Lush’s Love & Light hand cream, paired with their Lemony Flutter cuticle butter. We also love the L’occitane At Home Manicure kit- it has every product you need to keep your hands looking their best. Given that you may not have had the chance to get a fresh manicure before your partner popped the question, it may be in your best interest to apply a fresh coat of polish. Vogue recently published an article featuring Couple about how to choose the perfect polish to pair with your ring - check it out here! If you can’t freshen your polish, crop your nails out or try a pose that hides them. Once your hand is pampered and ready for its photo shoot, you’ll want to test out a few different poses of what looks good and feels natural. We recommend holding your hand upwards and straight, as it minimizes the look of veins and discoloration. Alternatively, you can rest your hand on something (like your new fiance's hand!) to give a more natural appearance.

The star of the show

You’ve found the perfect lighting and set-up, your hand is prepped, now what? Last but certainly not least, you want to make sure your ring is looking the best it possibly can. Any smudges or dust can be picked up in a closeup shot. Use your Gem Pen and a microfibre cloth to get the most sparkle and gleam out of your ring.
